چکیده

We present two defeasible logics of norm-propositions (statements about norms) that (i) consistently allow for the possibility of normative gaps and normative conflicts, and (ii) map each premise set to a sufficiently rich consequence set. In order to meet (i), we define the logic LNP, a conflictand gap-tolerant logic of norm-propositions capable of formalizing both normative conflicts and normative gaps within the object language. Next, we strengthen LNP within the adaptive logic framework for non-monotonic reasoning in order to meet (ii). This results in the adaptive logics LNP and LNP, which interpret a given set of premises in such a way that normative conflicts and normative gaps are avoided ‘whenever possible’. LNP and LNP are equipped with a preferential semantics and a dynamic proof theory.

T-norm-based fuzzy logics and logics for reasoning under vagueness

We contrast the concept underlying t-norm-based propositional fuzzy logics with the problem to whose solution fuzzy logics are frequently suggested as helpful – namely, to find a model of reasoning with vague information. We argue that fuzzy logics are useful as long as truth values can be identified with the meaning of the considered propositions. This, however, is rarely the case in practice;...

Practical Programming with Substructural Types

Substructural logics remove from classical logic rules for reordering, duplication, or dropping of assumptions. Because propositions in such a logic may no longer be freely copied or ignored, this suggests understanding propositions in substructural logics as representing resources rather than truth. For the programming language designer, substructural logics thus provide a framework for consid...

Combining Supervaluation and Degree Based Reasoning Under Vagueness

Two popular approaches to formalize adequate reasoning with vague propositions are usually deemed incompatible: On the one hand, there is supervaluation with respect to precisification spaces, which consist in collections of classical interpretations that represent admissible ways of making vague atomic statements precise. On the other hand, t-norm based fuzzy logics model truth functional reas...

Russell’s Paradox of the Totality of Propositions

Russell’s ‘‘new contradiction’’ about ‘‘the totality of propositions’’ has been connected with a number of modal paradoxes. M. Oksanen has recently shown how these modal paradoxes are resolved in the set theory NFU. Russell’s paradox of the totality of propositions was left unexplained, however. We reconstruct Russell’s argument and explain how it is resolved in two intensional logics that are ...

T-norm-based Fuzzy Logics and Logics for Human Reasoning

In [1] the authors considered finitely-valued modal logics with Kripke style semantics where both propositions and the accessibility relation are valued over a finite residuated lattice. Unfortunately, the necessity operator does not satisfy in general the normality axiom (K). In this paper we focus on the case of finite chains, and we consider a different approach based on introducing a multim...
